Fat kina prove winners for Tikipunga two

Two pupils from Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rāwhitiroa in the Whangarei suburb of Tikipunga have spiked a science award for their study of kina.
Brooklyn Manga-Harris and Tekerei Mihaka won the Northland Regional Council Environmental Excellence Award at last week’s Central Northland Science and Technology Fair.
Tumuaki Moana Aroha-Henry says it will be an inspiration to others.
“It just shows that kura kaupapa Maori can play at a level playing field test to any other kura. Although we are very, very small, we can definitely punch above our weight. And it gave them a new experience to look beyond just kaupapa Maori,” she says.
Brooklyn and Tekerei’s project, Tai timu tai rimu, looked at the correlation between the rimurimu or seaweed the kina feed on and how fat they are at harvest.
