Judge Caren Fox sworn in Chief Judge Māori Land Court.

Glass ceiling shattered as Judge Fox heads Māori Land Court
Judge Caren Fox was today sworn in as the first wahine to be chief judge of the Māori Land Court.
Cabinet Minister Nanaia Mahuta, who attended this morning’s consecration in Hamilton, says Judge Fox was also the first wāhine Māori appointed to the court, and she continues to shatter glass ceilings.
She says it’s a reflection of the times.
“For land and for women, things worth dying for, and she will be a strong steward of aspiration for Māori land development, ensuring we have really good governance structures over our whenua, that we are applying tikanga when we are thinking about our whenua, and also for the Waitangi Tribunal given the nature of issues we are confronting in a contemporary context,” she says.
