Hauraki Gulf iwi Ngāti Paoa will lay a rāhui around part of Waiheke Island in a bid to cut down the spread of caulerpa.
The invasive seaweed, which has already established itself at Aotea Great Barrier and Kawau, outcompetes native marine vegetation and can disrupt local fish habitats.
The rāhui will be laid on disturbing the seabed or anchoring within 1 nautical mile of Thompson’s Point or Onetangi Bay, where the outbreak has been identified.
NIWA and marine science experts are still working to define the edges and determine the extent of the outbreak.
