Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins says a call from a Kiingitanga spokesperson to stamp out racist politicking was timely.

Rahui Papa told political parties at the Koroneihana at Turangawaewae on Sunday that their manifestoes should not belittle Māori in their own whenua.

Mr Hipkins says he’s taken up the wero.

“I’ve made a commitment as the Prime Minister and also the leader of the Labour Party, that I won’t use ethnicity, or race as a wedge to divide New Zealanders and I challenge all other political parties to make that same commitment,” he says.

All major parties except New Zealand First and ACT were at Turangawaewae to celebrate the Koroneihana of Kiingi Tuheitia.
