Wealth gap sparks rally in Tamaki Makaurau

Auckland Action Against Poverty is holding a Tax the Rich Rally tomorrow in Tamaki Makaurau.
Organiser Brooke Pao Stanley says the principle of increasing taxes at the top has widespread support, with a Newshub poll in May showing 53 percent support for a wealth tax and 52 percent support a Capital Gains tax.
She says the 300 wealthiest families pay a lower share of their income in tax than essential workers.
“This is coming from grassroots, from unions, from old time activists, anti-poverty groups, and we’re calling on the Government to tax wealth for climate action, to end poverty, housing for all, for universal public services and to cut taxes for workers – essentially to change the system,” she says.
The rally starts downtown at 2 pm and goes up Queen St to Aotea Square.
