Racism next step in pay transparency law
The Human Rights Commission’s Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, Saunoamaali’i Karanina Sumeo, has welcomed a push for pay transparency.
Firms with more than 250 stuff will have to report on any gender pay gap,
Government will also look at how ethnicity can be included in the reporting.
The legislation is supported by both major parties.
Dr Sumeo says equity is a human right.
“There seems to be a general recognition and respect for the calls from all different groups for pay transparency – because we want to eliminate the sexism, but also the racism. We’re entitled to racial and gender equality – its a fundamental human right,” she says.
Dr Sumeo says she’s like to see pay transparency widened to include all employers, not just the largest.
