Rangatahi learn kaitiakitanga in urban awa
Conservation Minister Willow Jean Prime has given a special karanga to rangatahi involved in restoring a south Auckland catchment.
Minister Prime visited Te Whakaoranga o te Puhinui as part of Conservation Week.
She says the rangatahi are fully engaged as akonga and kaitiaki.
“They are awa rangers, they are learning kōrero tukuiho, matauranga tukuiho, maramataka Māori, whakawhānaungatanga so a fantastic example of rangatahi working alongside community, business, council and central government to restore their awa,” she says.
The Puhinui project is delivered through the Sustainable Business Network with $1 million in Jobs for Nature funding, and aims to address a range of ecological, economic and social issues.
