Iwi teams with pharma for wellness research

Roche New Zealand has signed with Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua to explore new avenues for disease prevention, treatment, and wellness.
General manager Alexander Muelhaupt believes the agreement is the first of its kind between a global healthcare business and an indigenous group.
He says it could have wide-ranging benefits for Ngati Whatua, and eventually all Māori.
“Māori are generally diagnosed at a later stage, 20 percent more likely to get cancer, and twice as likely to die of cancer. So -terrible statistics here, and our mission is that we better serve Maori through this close partnership,” Mr Muelhaupt says.
Runanga co-chair Dame Naida Glavish says Tu Kotahi sets out a clear understanding of how the iwi can work with Roche for mutual benefit while preserving its mana motuhake.
