Huge social housing complex filling up

The first tenants have moved into what’s being called the largest single-site social housing complex in the country, and more are lining up.
Te Mātāwai in central Auckland’s Greys Avenue has 90 studio apartments, 133 one bedroom, and 53 two bedroom apartments spread across 3 adjacent buildings.
Operations manager Puawai Annas says it can take up to 400 residents – many of whom will be Māori and Pasifika – and there are guardians on site to safeguard the residents and the buildings.
“We also boast 3,000 square metres of communal spaces and retail space. We’ve got two lobbies for residents to socialise and interact. We also have bookable spaces for our communal areas – where we expect people to connect and meet new people there,” she says.
Many of the tenants will have disabilities and other needs, so wrap-around services will also be provided – including the regional Kainga Ora office being based onsite.
