Big tobacco behind small dairy sob story
Māori public health body Hāpai Te Hauora says the involvement of tobacco companies in the Save Our Stores campaign is anti-democratic and manipulative.
The campaign calls on New Zealanders to rally behind small dairy owners facing alleged threats to their incomes from the Smokefree 2025 Act.
Hāpai interim CEO Jason Alexander says while it purports to be driven by dairy owners, Radio New Zealand journalist Farah Hancock revealed it’s funded by BAT New Zealand and Imperial Brands.
He says the such campaigns undermine efforts to improve Māori health outcomes by reducing smoking rates.
