Niue children losing kai to climate change


Wāhine MPs from 12 Pacific nations are in Parliament this week to talk about kaupapa impacting their countries.
Labour list MP Anahila Kanongata’a, who is hosting the hui on behalf of Aotearoa-New Zealand, says it’s the first such meeting since 2019 because of Covid closures.
It’s sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Tai a Kiwa stronger Pacific parliaments programme.
Topics for discussion include domestic violence, representation of women in parliament, getting wāhine into decision making roles, human rights and climate change.
She says the Niue’s fisheries minister Mona Ainu’u shared stories from the island’s children affected by climate change.
“The voices from the children is focused on what they see everyday, which is their food supply in terms of seafood is disappearing and they’re now having to travel further into the moana to find food,” Ms Kanongata’a says.
Countries represented include Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Aotearoa-New Zealand, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands.
