New light on Lander
Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is restaging a significant work by Ngāpuhi artist and academic Maureen Lander.
String Games was created for the opening of Te Papa Tongarewa 25 years ago.
Curator Melanie Oliver says artists were asked to reflect on ‘our world’ and values as a country, inspired by treasures and taonga from the national collections.
Lander used photographs of Maori whai or string games taken between 1912 and 1926 as the starting point for an installation that combined a giant replica of a whai made of UV-lit fluorescent rope with a neon-green box representing the museum’s edition of a Marcel Duchamp work containing miniature prints of the conceptual artist’s key works.
Maureen Lander: Aho Marama Strings of Light opens on Saturday and runs until July 2024.
