Toi Māori celebrated at Govett-Brewster

New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster Art Gallery has dug deep into its collection to present a show spanning more than 50 years of contemporary Māori art practice.
Te Hau Whakatonu – A Series of Never-Ending Beginnings also includes new commissions by Ngahina Hohaia and George Watson as well as Brett Graham’s Cease Tide of Wrong Doing, the giant niu poll created in 2020 for the gallery’s central space.
The gallery is fundraising to add to the piece to its collection.
Curator Taarati Taiaroa says the exhibition aims to help inform the future focus of toi Māori at the gallery and in the collection.
It will run until February 2024.
