Consummate leader leaves Te Matatini stage
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says Te Mātārae-i-Ōrehu leader Wetini Mitai Ngatai is one of the greats in New Zealand arts.
The two time Te Matatini winner has announced he is withdrawing his Rotorua-based group from competition after three decades.
Mr Jackson says he was original and innovative in terms of stagecraft and choreography, and he led from the front.
“So when him and his soulmate who died, Taini Morrison, hit the stage they were just the most dynamic duo and he was this incredible, handsome, consummate leader, and then there was this stunning Morrison wahine at his side, she was sensational with her blond hair, we were riveted in terms of watching them,” he says.
