Mānawatia a Matariki with Te Whānau o Waipareira

Te Whānau o Waipareira are hosting their second whānau-friendly Matariki celebration along the streets of Henderson with free live music, local food and craft vendors plus the kingmakers in this years general election.
CEO John Tamihere is expecting thousands to come and enjoy Matariki ki Waipareira under the giant marquee.
“We’re all about giving back to the very community from which we were born over 40 years ago. Matariki marks the beginning of the Māori New Year to remember those we have lost, and gather together with whānau looking forward to the promise of a new year. It is also the last chance to change electoral rolls”.
Live performances include Annie Crummer, Tiki Taane and Katchafire with lead singer Logan Bell counting the days.
“The Fire is really excited to be home at this time with our families and our loved ones, just in time for Matariki celebrations and the renewal of the Māori Luna calendar. We are urging all the whānau to come through. We rarely get to play whānau events like this, looking forward to seeing you all. Nau mai haere mai – kia Manawatia a Matariki “.
Tiki Taane echoed those sentiments.
“Amped to be bringing my One Man Band Show to Matariki ki Waipareira, seeing old friends and meeting new. Matariki is the best time to recharge and warm the soul with music, culture and kai.”
Te Pāti Māori co-leaders will be attending with their eight candidates and Rawiri Waititi is looking forward to being back in his old neighbourhood.
“Out of all the Matariki events we chose West Auckland to mark this occasion in an incredibly busy year which I believe will prove to be a pivotal one for us all”.
Matariki ki Waipareira is on rain or shine from 4:00 PM Thursday July 13 along Catherine Street, Henderson.
