Authenticity post-Covid calling card for Māori tourism
A new series launching on Whakaata Māori later this month will look at how Māori tourism is evolving after Covid.
Director Rangi Rangitukunoa says Tapuwae also looks at Indigenous tourism across the Pacific.
He says the sort of tourists who seek out Māori ventures want more authentic experiences.
“I guess the days of bright lights and brochures and a haka concert, but people are looking for something that really grounds, them, touching taiao, and also how our people also literally, whakapapa-wise, connected to these spaces or places of which they are kaitiaki of,” he says.
Mr Rangitukunoa says most of the ventures they found to highlight are whanau-based and aim to have a low impact on the environment.
