Schools line up for Te Manu Korero reo tohu

More Tamaki Makaurau schools could be set to join Ngā Manu Kōrero speech competitions.
Spokesperson Harley Emery says this week’s Te Whaitua o Uenuku competition at Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae for South and East Auckland schools drew about 600 people including five schools in a spectator capacity to get a feel on what the competition is about.
She says there’s been a shift with schools producing more te reo Māori speakers for Te Rāwhiti Ihaka and Pei Te Hurinui Jones sections.
“What I found was awesome is we’ve had schools that have been coming to Manu Korero from probably 10 years. In the greater schem of things they’re quite young but they have come with only reo pakeha speakers and they are finally trying to built the capacity to have more reo Māori speakers form their schools and that’s exactly where we want to be going,” Ms Emery says.
