Maniapoto and Ngati Tama work on relationship

North Taranaki iwi Ngāti Tama met this week with Ngāti Maniapoto to start developing an agreement in principle on shared areas of interest.
This follows Te Nehenehenui, Maniapoto’s post settlement governance entity, asking New Plymouth District Council to be part of an agreement on waterways within its rohe.
Te Nehenehenui chair Bella Takiari-Brame says it has withdrawn the request and formally apologised to Ngati Tama for the way it was done.
Frances White, the chair of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Tama, says his iwi is keen to wānanga with Te Nehenehenui and Maniapoto regional body Te Whare ki Mōkau ki Runga to identify the nature and extent of customary interests.
He says their shared history is of battles and marriages, and a number of whānau have strong ties with both iwi, so it’s important to get the relationship right.
