Slanted edits confidence blow for RNZ
Radio New Zealand chair Jim Mather says public trust is critical for any news organisation.
The RNZ board has appointed a three person inquiry panel to look in its editorial practices after a staff member was caught rewriting wire stories on the Ukraine war with a pro-Russian slant.
It’s headed by media law expert Willy Akel with help from public law expert and former journalist Linda Clark and Alan Sunderland, a former director of editorial standards at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Mr Mather says it’s a matter of confidence.
“When your audience loses confidence in your ability to deliver trusted news and current affairs and all other content it erodes public confidence and so because these wire stories from Reuters have been altered, it does raise questions about how far, how deep, and what else has been changed?’ he says.
Mr Mather says people expect public broadcasters like RNZ and Radio Waatea to have safety procedures in place,
