High levels of manganese and iron reacting to the chlorine used to treat the water supply results in a murky brown brew flowing from the taps.
Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau co-chair Hone Te Rire says it gets so bad people won’t drink it or even bathe in it.
He’s unhappy with the response from Kawerau District Council.
“Our council need to get on to it and fix these sort of things yesterday. It’s been an ongoing issue and the community are really over it, They want it sorted,” he says.
Mr Te Rire says Kawerau residents are buying expensive bottled water rather than using what’s in the taps.
