Super rugby losing shine
A veteran sports commentator says the Super Rugby tournament has become a shadow of what it once was.
After the weekend quarter finals three of the final four are kiwi franchises – the Blues, Chiefs and Crusaders.
Ken Laben says the 12-team format has diminished the prestige of the competition.
“The super rugby competition in my view is a mere shadow of what it once was. As an overall concept I think the top teams are still competitive but there is a larger gulf now between top and bottom,” he says.
He says if the South African teams were still in Super Rugby three of the final eight wouldn’t have made it into the playoffs.
