Māori kiwifruit growers see off tough year

It’s been a tough year for kiwifruit growers, with Zespri’s global sales volumes down from 201.5 million trays to 183.5 million trays and total global revenue from fruit sales down 3 percent to $3.92 billion.
Maori Kiwifruit Growers chair Anaru Timutimu says quality issues combined with floods and cyclones were behind the lower sales.
He says increased reopening the borders to seasonal workers and increased automation and efficiencies in the packhouses has helped to get this year’s harvest picked and shipped, and growers are looking towards a good harvest next year.
“What the industry is looking at and is a little bit concerned about because you need to get a lot more organisers around next year when it’s forecast that will get a large volume increase by about 50 percent of what we’re packing this year, so next year is going to be a big challenge,” Mr Timutimu says.
