Original waiata set tone for Kia Mau festival

Singer AJA says she’s honoured to kick off this year’s Kia Mau festival in Whanganui a Tara with shows tonight and tomorrow.
The biennial festival will feature the best of Māori, Pasifika and Indigenous theatre, music, dance and visual art over the next two weeks.
AJA says her Manawa Pao concert at Circa Theatre is a chance to show off some of her best work.
“There are waiata that are all original and things I have developed over the years and they are all waiata that speak to personal experiences, cultural narratives from myself, my whanau and my iwi but also beautiful waiata to showcase the material I do have,” she says.
Also this weekend, Taki Rua Theatre brings back one of its original Te Reo Māori Season productions: Taku Waimarie, by Willy Craig Fransen.
