New leader for Te Kura Pounamu

Te Rina Leonard has become the first wahine Māori to head the country’s largest school, Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, formerly The Correspondence School.
She’s currently the school’s deputy chief executive of learning delivery, and takes over on July 31 when Mike Hollings steps down after 17 years in the top spot.
Ms Leonard, from Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Ngāti Whakaue, and Ngāti Raukawa), says Te Kura is uniquely placed to be a powerful catalyst for change in the education system after going through massive changes over the past five years.
Te Kura has had a 40 percent increase in full-time enrolments since 2018, and last year had almost 30,000 tauira.
