Te Pou and pūoro get arts revitalisation putea
The Centre for New Zealand Music Trust it to get up to $1.2 million from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund for a range of Māori and Pacific projects.
They include Hōtaka Māori- a podcast centred around mōteatea; a Youth wellbeing project using sound healing with pūoro Māori; and helping develop the music business skills of Māori artists.
There’s also a project to research and revitalise eight endangered instruments from the Pacific.
West Auckland’s Te Pou Theatre Trust is to get up to $377,476 to support capability building for emerging Māori venue technicians & producers.
Taranaki Māori Trust Board gets up to $254,315 to share and safeguard mātauranga specific to Taranaki Toi Māori and ngā toi o Taranaki, focussed on oral arts including poi manu, karakia, karanga, waiata, pao and haka of Taranaki and Te Kāhui Maunga.
Te Rā Ringa Raupā gets up to $495,278 to pass on the mātauranga of the only known woven Māori sail, Te Rā.
Toi Iho Charitable Trust up to $200,000 to challenge cultural misappropriation and safeguard Mātauranga Māori by revitalising the national Toi Iho trademark.
The fund approved 42 applications totalling $11.4 million, with one further round to go.
