HELP Auckland offers chance to be helpful
A specialist provider of sexual harm support services for Tāmaki Makaurau is trying to raise $40,000 by the end of June to maintain its level of care.
HELP Auckland supporter Rachel Axis-Taane Tinorau says for the past 40 years the roopu has developed a range of services, including a helpline, crisis support, ongoing therapy for survivors of rape and sexual violence, and prevention education.
She says the most recent family violence survey found 1 in 4 wahine and 1 in 9 tane in Aotearoa have experienced sexual abuse before the age of 15, with Maori heavily represented in the figures.
“People that have experienced sexual trauma, sexual violence in their lives are far more likely to have things like addiction, end up in the criminal system, the intergenerational trauma we see, physical, mental, spiritual whanau impacts negatively from sexual trauma,” Ms Tinorau says.
The Do Something HELPful fundraising campaign allows groups, businesses and individuals to identify something they can do to help their community and use that to generate sponsorship of donations to go to HELP.
