Hui shows rangatahi into health work choices
Māori health workforce development programme Kia Ora Hauora is holding a three-day hui in Wellington this week for the next generation of Māori healthcare workers.
Coordinator Cazna Luke says Te Manu Korokī includes keynote speakers, master class sessions, university speed dating sessions and social networking.
She says the key to the programme are Kia Ora Hauora champions who have been in the programme since high school and are now working in hospitals and community health roles.
“They look like the rangatahi, they are from where they are from, they have been and I think there is nothing more inspiring than seeing someone who looks like you and is from your community actually doing what you want to do,” Ms Luke says.
While taking science subjects at high school can accelerate the pathway into a health career, there are other ways of bridging into health that Kia Ora Hauora can support.
