Whānau approach gets Budget boost
Māori housing, health, education, land development, and Whānau Ora are set to benefit from $825 million in funding commitments in yesterday’s Budget.
Crown Māori Relations Minister Kelvin Davis says with six Māori Ministers within Cabinet, there is a whānau voice at the decision-making table.
Māori housing gets $200 million spread across various programmes, including long-term housing supply, capability building and repairs to existing homes.
Since last year’s Budget, the Government has approved or contracted 1,018 homes, enabled 1,615 infrastructure sites, and made repairs to 415 homes.
Maori Development Minister Willie Jackson says another $23 million over four years will go into Te Ringa Hāpai Whenua Fund which enables landowners to undertake land-based economic, cultural, social and environmental projects.
There’s also $8 million for Te Tumu Paeroa, Aotearoa’s largest administrator of whenua Māori, to support owners to comply with regulatory changes.

Whānau Ora is to get another $168 million over four years, including expanding the Ngā Tini Whetu programme which supports pēpi and māmā during their first 1000 days.
