Small putea gets kids active
South Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu has extended a scheme to help tamariki and rangatahi Māori access sporting opportunities.
Its pouārahi, Ivy Harper, says the Te Kiwai project helped 801 tamariki in the past year with a one-off payment of up the $300 which can cover fees, uniforms, registration or just a new pair of boots.
“Some of them were parts of teams, some of them were individuals doing kaupapa, The whanau voice and the response we get, a lot from the tamariki themselves and also the parents, just grateful to be able to see their children out and about who have often missed our simply because they can’t afford it,” she says.
Ms Harper says as well as sports like rugby and netball, Te Kiwai will also cover activities like kapa haka.
