Primary healthcare for Māori gets top up

Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare says a $44 million boost for primary health care providers will improve services for Māori and Pacific populations.
The putea, which comes over two years, will help set up comprehensive care teams, including kaiāwhina, physiotherapists, pharmacists, care coordinators, and in some rural areas, paramedics.
There will also be a focus on early intervention, faster treatment and better support for whānau.
Mr Henare says Māori health providers or providers with large numbers of Māori on their books haven’t been funded to the same levels as non-Māori providers.
“It doubles the amount of money for those that serve Maori through the primary healthcare system as well as those Maori who access health not through a Maori health provider so this helps turn the dial on making sure this money is spent on Maori and Pacific communities who need that service,” he says.
