Fair transition for Māori needed in climate plan

He Pou a Rangi Climate Change Commission deputy chair Lisa Tumahai says it’s essential there is an equitable transition for Māori in moving to lower emissions.
The commission has released its draft advice on what needs to be in the Government’s second emissions reduction plan, covering Aotearoa New Zealand’s 2026-2030 emissions budget.
It includes recommendation resources be allocated directly to hapu, marae and iwi Māori to accelerate reduction of emissions.
“Iwi and whanau land trusts are heavily invested in extractive industries, primary industries, forestry. We want to ensure they have the best opportunity of climate finance and investment to assist them to transition from one state to another,” Ms Tumahai says.
She says it’s essential iwi Maori be a part of any redesign of the emissions trading scheme, especially in forestry reforms.
The draft plan is out for consultation over the next eight weeks.
