Change to sustainable tourism needed
The chair of New Zealand Māori Tourism says it could be at least five years before the sector is back to pre-Covid levels.
Dale Stephens says his board have been looking at factors affecting the recovery,
They range from obvious things like food price inflation, staff shortages and the value of the US dollar to progress on free trade agreements, natural disasters and neglected infrastructure.
“So there are big issues for us to grapple with, because for us to get that tourism sector back up to where it was pre-Covid, there is a lot of work involved and we think it is going to be a five to seven year programme to get it back not just to the same level of putea coming in but actually changing the type of tourism so it’s more sustainable, it brings less harm to our natural environment and it brings greater opportunities to all our people,” Mr Stephens says.
