Dusk service a highlight for Waitangi Anzac Day
Waitangi National Trust chair Pita Tipene hopes a dusk ANZAC service will become an annual event at the Waitangi Treaty grounds.
The first such service was held yesterday.
“When we talk the words of the ode, ‘and the going down of the sun,’ I think there needs to be something when the sun is going down and we think about those who gave sacrifices in a whole lot of different ways. It gives people an opportunity to go to dawn services and other services in the course of the day and then finish off at dusk,” Pita Tipene says.
He says it was wonderful to see 28 Maori Battalion’s A Company flag flying at the service, which was attended by the battalion’s last surviving member, Sir Robert Bom Gillies.
