The company planning Auckland’s light rail is seeking feedback from Māori on what they want to see the new network deliver.
Treaty partnerships manager Tipa Compain says as a crown company Auckland Light Rail needs to honour the commercial and cultural aspects of treaty settlements with mana whenua in Tāmaki Makaurau, as well as recognising the larger Māori population living in the city, especially those in Mangere and Onehunga.
“We’ve got a large team of experts and planners, statisticians, trying to understand what is the best way and where is the best way we can push this corridor through without displacement and particularly with our people and the large Pasifika population, how do we enable that? How do we ensure light rail is not going to be disadvantageous to our people? How can it be advantageous?
There will be 24 kilometres of light rail between the city centre and the airport.
