Ki o Rahi nationals start this week in Rotorua
The national secondary schools competition for ki-o-kahi, kicks off in Rotorua today with a mass pōwhiri for 30 competing kura.
The sport has been described as a cross between rugby, cricket and dodgeball.
Tournament spokesperson Tamihana Morunga says for the first time the competition will be televised.
He says defending champion Te Kura Māori o Ngā Tapuwae from Tāmaki Makaurau will be hard to beat, but many kura fancy their chances.
“There’s talent all over the motu, and it just depends on the day as well, what teams, what strategies they use to implement on the day, and how they’re feeling, how healthy they are. So, I’m looking forward to this, it’s going to be a very exciting tournament,” he says.
The tournament is being held at Puketawhero Park, and Tamihana Morunga says it’s an exciting game to play and watch.
