Teacher voice needed in education reform
Green Party education spokesperson Teanau Tuiono says National’s bring back the three Rs plan hasn’t been thought through.
National wants to make primary school kids sit through an hour of reading, writing and maths every day.
Mr Tuiono says it should listen to the teachers, who have gone on strike to say what the sector needs.
“And it’s resourcing and making sure you deal with the workload issues, class size, making sure teachers can take sick leave like for example for kindergarten teachers as well. This random thing the Nats are doing is national standards but worse because under their plan you will end up testing 7-year-old kids twice a year and I don’t know how they think they’re going to pay for it,” he says.
Mr Tuiono says the sector is going through a curriculum refresh, and teachers doesn’t need any extra workload.
