Auxit will hurt rest of country

Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says Auckland Council’s decision to quit Local Government New Zealand will have a negative effect not only on the super city but on the rest of the country.
Mr Henare says while Mayor Wayne Brown and the nine councillors who supported him will have their reasons for yesterday’s vote, only one of the city’s local boards supported the move.
He says mayors around the country have told him about the value of the networking and support they get from being part of the national body.
“Auckland is essential to the economic prosperity of this country. If Auckland sneezes, the country catches hypothermia and now if we remove Auckland from a vital localised network here in Aotearoa, one van only imagine what that means for the rest of the country so I’m disappointed,” Mr Henare says.
He says the Government’s reforms in areas like health has been to break down the walls between geographical bodies, not build new ones.
