Māori police minister progressive thinker
Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, is talking up his new Police Minister as someone Maori will appreciate and enjoy working with.
Ginny Andersen is the MP for Wellington’s Hutt South electorate, and her Labour Party website says she is fluent in te reo… although she herself is more modest about it.
She spent 10 years as a police policy advisor on Maori, Pacific and Ethnic services, with a focus on reducing Māori offending.
Mr Hipkins says she’s a progressive thinker on justice who is looking for more innovative solutions than just locking people up.
“I think Ginny is going to be an outstanding Minister of Police, and I think Maori communities will really enjoy engaging with her” he says.
Minister Andersen has indicated her priorities include improving community safety – especially around retail crime and repeat youth offending.
