Maori keyboard child’s play

The New Zealand manager for global computer company Lenovo says it took a child to point out the need for an easier way to type macrons.
A new keyboard that shortcuts the complicated business of putting macrons into Maori text was launched at Mangere’s Nga Whare Waatea Marae this week.
Libby McGregor says it was her 8-year-old son Felix who inspired her to lobby her company to add the feature.
“He came home from school and asked the question why he had no te reo keys on the keyboard that I was using. And that really inspired me to question whether that was something that potentially I could advocate for and I guess take into the wider company,” she says.
Ms McGregor says it also made sense for Lenovo New Zealand to add the feature because it supplies hardware to government agencies and educational institutions that frequently use te reo and need macrons.
Lenovo, Maori Keyboard, launched yesterday but this is a huge step for Lenovo and its partners to create this new Māori keyboard.
