Native Ride to get viewers close to horse action
The makers of the popular Hoiho television series want to get audiences closer to the action than ever before.
Michelle Lee and Brent Ironmonger’s Kapu Ti Productions are working on Native Ride where four pairs of Maori horse experts are challenged to turn a wild horse into a tamed, trained and work-ready equine companion in 100 days.
The teams are based from Te Tai Tokerau to Opotiki, and Michelle Lee says they’ve used not only the usual television cameras but Go-Pros to capture the action.
“It’s just kind exciting to be able to finally kind of achieve the intimacy for the audience. Our hope is that the audience feels that they are right there in the yard. Or they’re right there on the mountain top. Or they’re right there in the sea with the horse” she says.
Filming for Native Ride wraps up this weekend in Opotiki – and the series is set to screen on Whakaata Maori during Matariki.
