Prime Minister; Equity issues with Government’s climate change policies.
Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has acknowledged equity issues exist when it comes to whānau wanting to upgrade to low- or zero-emission vehicles.
The Government announced a reprioritization of policies to free up $700million which will be spent of bread and butter issues said PM Chris Hipkins.
One of those policies sidelined is the social leasing car scheme.
This was part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring an equitable transition to a low-emissions economy.
It provided leasing arrangements to low income families for clean cars at a set weekly price.
But the scheme was proving difficult to implement. And several of the communities where it was to be trialed have been affected by the recent weather.
“The schemes that were set out is part of our way of dealing with some of those equity issues weren’t necessarily going to hit the target was the feedback we were getting.”
“Some of it, was a difficult concept to implement. So we will go back to the drawing board and we’ll look at other ways to achieve that.” said Prime Minister Chris Hipkins.
