Marae could be community emergency hub

Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis wants to see emergency community hubs set up on marae around the north.
He says in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle it’s clear people took warnings too lightly and weren’t prepared.
He’s received a request from a group of wahine involved in the storm response for community hubs, and he think’s it’s a great idea.
“Most people would say a marae is an obvious place but if a marae is on a flood plain it’s probably not so a school hall, a community hall, a church or a marae already set up, we may not use it for 10 years but then when the next big blow comes it’s there with solar power, with water tanks, with walkie talkies, with generators, chain saws, all those sorts of things so we are well prepared and everyone knows that is the place to go in your little community should you need it,” Mr Davis says.
