Māori cut through at Golden Shears
It’s the hundredth year of the Kumeu agricultural show this weekend, and some sharp shearing performances are expected on the back of last weekend’s Golden Shears in Masterton.
Doug Laing from Shearing Sports New Zealand says that event was a reminder of Maoridom’s long and successful association with the sport of shearing, with Joel Henare winning his ninth woolhandling title and Rahera Kerr taking the senior woolhandling title.
There was also some talent coming through.
“Young fella called Maaka Nikora, 14 year old from Taumarunui. He won the novice shearing event on the opening day – which had probably the youngest competitor at the golden shears in there, a young ten year old called Wairua Edmonds, from Masterton. He didn’t qualify for the semi-final or anyhing but nevertheless 10 years old is a pretty big effort – and about the 4th generation of the Edmonds whanau from Masterton,” Mr Laing says.
Another talented Maori whanau is the Hansons – with Ngaio Hanson, her brother Hemi and sister Ana Braddick all placing highly at the Golden Shears.
