Surf and turf in Ngai Tai plans
The chair of Ngai Tai ki Tamaki says the iwi is looking to generate future wealth from its Hauraki Gulf holdings.
Ngai Tai has become a major contributor to Auckland’s house buiding boom, with completed developments in Pukekohe and Westmere and ground work going on in Otahuhu and Mangere.
James Brown says its first mussel farm to the east of Ponui Island is now producing, with a second approved by Auckland Council and a Clevedon oyster farm going through the consent process.
“Our CBD is out in the pataka kai amongst other things so we’ve got a huge focus on food and bev, we’re gowiojgn our own breed over at Motutapu Island with Derek Spencer and the Black Angus stock we’ve got out there, so in think in the future the nation will focus pretty strongly – as much as they have on hospitality and property – on food and beverage,” he says.
Ngai Tai is advertising jobs, with its aquaculture workforce set to grow.
