OMV signals Aotearoa exit
Greenpeace has welcomed news the country’s biggest oil and gas producer is looking to sell its New Zealand assets.
Austrian-owned OMV has been the target of a campaign by iwi and environmentalists opposing its attempts to develop new offshore wells.
Greenpeace head of campaigns, Amanda Larsson, says it heralds the inevitable end of oil exploration in Aotearoa and shows the strength of the ban on offshore drilling that hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders fought for and won.
She says it’s time for National Party leader Chris Luxon to walk away from his promise to repeal the ban.
OMV bought Shell’s New Zealand production assets off the Taranaki coast in 2018 and owns a 69 percent stake in the Maari oil field, 74 percent of the Pohokura gas field, and full ownership of the Maui field, as well as three offshore exploration permits, and onshore storage facilities.
