Wairoa on alert as rain returns

A veteran journalist says the concern is growing in Wairoa where more rain is falling.
Derek Fox says his own area around Mahia lost its power and communications during last week’s cyclone, only a few houses near a river flooded, and most of the community got through relatively lightly.
The iwi is coodinating supplies into the area and the hub at Mahia Beach is serving two meals a day for all comers.
But in Wairoa, people are still tyring to clean up the devastation cased when the river broke its banks and flowed into some of the most populated parts of the town.
“There are hundreds of houses and buildings the water went into and mountains of silt and one of the big problems is it is starting to rain again today and a lot of that sit that waas dug out of houses and is on the street – where is that going to go with this rain that is starting to come down now and more rain that is expected this afternoon and through the night?” Mr Fox says.
He says if people want to help they should send cash rather than goods.
