Māori landowners start cyclone clean up
The Federation of Māori Authorities is calling for a major rethink of how we future-manage land-based production.
Chair Traci Houpapa says Maori landowners are facing a big clean-up after Cyclone Gabrielle.
At the same time, its South Island members are facing a third year of drought.
“While our focus has to be, quite rightly, on the north and in our areas because of Gabrielle – we’re also really mindful that our ahuwhenua in the south are dealing with yet another drought, and the impact of likely fires is going to be significant,” she says.
Ms Houpapa says members also face water and feed shortages.
She says the government must find a way to react more quickly to weather extremes.
