Hawke’s Bay is bracing for a long day as Cyclone Gabrielle moves south.

Radio Kahungunu station manager Apikara Brightwell says trees are down on most street in Napier and Hastings after a night of heavy rain and wind.

The main bridge between Napier and Hastings was closed by flooding.

“Our expressway is going to be shut down shortly. There’s cars floating down the expressway as well. It’s a bit chaotic and there are power outages all around Hawke’s Bay,,” she says.

Apikara Brightwell says Radio Kahungunu is operating on a generator as it joins the 23 iwi stations around the country such getting critical messages out to whanau.
