Evacuations at Dargaville as storm swells river

Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says Cyclone Gabrielle moving south, Northland still needs to be on high alert for the ongoing effects of the storm.
While Kaitaia got off relatively lightly, Kaeo has been awash, and there are fears of more flooding in Dargaville.
Some homes had to be evacuated overnight when the Awakino River on on the northern edge of the town burst its banks, and more homes are being evacuated because of concents about the Northern Wairoa River, whose catchement includes flooded areas around Whangarei.
“The next few tides will be critical so technicians will be watching the flows intio the Northern Wairoa River and there may be more evacuations. At the moment there’s just surface flooding in Dargaville but with the southwesterly wind pushing against the water coming down, there’s a possiblity the river might burst its banks but fingers crossed it won’t come to that,” Mr Davis says.
