Nurse numbers up, waiting times down in Counties Manukau

Almost 100 new locally-trained nurses have started work this week at Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau.
Chief medical officer Andrew Connelly says many of them are Maori or Pasifika, and the intake will help ease some of the recent staff shortages at Middlemore Hospital.
Waiting lists are also starting to head down, especially at the Manukau superclinic.
“We want to get that even lower but that is a significant improvement and on the operating front the number waiting more than a year has dropped dramatically. I’m cautiously optimistic we’re heading in the right direction,” Dr Connolly says
Staff shortages at community care providers and overall poverty levels result in in increased demand on the Middlemore emergency department.
